Nokia has just introduced the Nokia N1 -?an impressive new Android tablet with a neat design, high-end features and a reasonable price. AndroidPIT managed to get?a first look at the Nokia N1 at MWC 2015 - here's our initial, hands-on Nokia N1 review.

The price of the Nokia N1 tablet will be 249 € when it arrives in Europe sometime during 2015, according to a Nokia spokesman I spoke with during my review.

The design of the Nokia N1 is based on a unibody aluminum shell, which clearly emulates the iPad Mini. Nokia was totally open about this point during my review. The fact is that the construction of the N1 is impeccable. The device's edges encase the screen, with which it is level. The N1 is simple yet very elegant.

On the bottom, there are stereo speakers and USB 3.0 port, type C. This is a standard which allows users to plug a USB connector in both directions.

The top has the 3.5mm headphone jack and power button. The back of the tablet is completely devoid of sharp edges or corners. The camera's sensor does not protrude and only a discreet Nokia logo is visible.

From the beginning of my test of the Nokia N1, I found the design attractive. The Nokia tablet is ergonomic and comes in two finishes; gray aluminum and graphite.

The Nokia spokesman told me that, on paper, the Nokia N1 screen is identical to that of the iPad Mini 3. Its 7.9-inch IPS panel has a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, giving it a pixel density of about 324 ppi.

The first test of the Nokia N1 shows that it has a quality screen. The display is good, with ?natural color rendering, plus nice saturation and contrast. The brightness is not the highest I've seen, but it seems sufficient for everyday use.

The viewing angles looked good to me, though this is probably related to the fact that the slab is rolled and uses zero-gap technology (zero space).

The Nokia N1 tablet runs Android 5.0 Lollipop. The Nokia launcher, Z Launcher, is pre-installed on the N1, but you can replace it with any other.

Z Launcher is a free download from the Google Play Store on all Android smartphones, but is compatible with N1. Beyond the specific features of Lollipop, Z Launcher is transforming the way we use and search for applications on Android. From the main screen, you can draw a letter, all applications that begin with that letter, or include it in their name are displayed.

In practise, it was?surprisingly effective and I found myself using it instinctively in this first review?of the Nokia N1. The application drawer is displayed as a list and icons are categorized.

During this short review of the Nokia N1, the tablet was very fluid and showed no signs of lag or bugginess. Of course, I'll wait for a full review to tell you more, but my first impression is very positive.

The version presented at MWC 2015 uses an Intel Atom 64-bit Z3580 processor clocked at 2.3 GHz. The version that will arrive in Europe will be equipped with a more powerful processor. A Nokia manager told me that Qualcomm was interested in a partnership, but this did not progress because the Finns do not want to damage their excellent relations with Intel. We'll have to wait and see, then. The N1 also packs 2GB of DDR3 RAM.

All the apps I've tested run smoothly on the N1. c ANDROIDPIT

A quick AnTuTu benchmark confirmed our inklings. It achieved a score of 47,050, just below the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

Nokia claims battery life of 12 hours for the N1. This seems realistic, as the battery capacity is 5300 mAh. In comparison, the Nexus 7 (2013) - not exactly a model for the device category - has a battery capacity of 3750 mAh.

We already knew about the N1. It is available in China, and should arrive in Europe this year. For 249 €, this level of performance and quality design makes the N1 one of the tablets to follow in 2015. The verdict of the first review of the Nokia N1 is very positive.



Wallapop is a free “virtual flea market” where you can buy and sell items?to people in your area. Following the likes of Gumtree and, of course, eBay, does this app have something to set it apart from the others? Find out in our Wallapop review.

The Wallapop format is simple to understand and easy to use. After you download the app, you register (or log in via Facebook or Gmail) and you can start buying and selling items straight away.

The interesting thing about Wallapop is that items are searched for based on location. You are given a scrolling list of items for sale in your area, and the further down the list you go, the wider the radius of sellers becomes.

Having a search radius which automatically widens as you scroll down is in an intuitive feature, and I don’t know why it isn’t present in more apps or services. Changing the radius of searches manually seems clumsy now when measured against the efficiency of the Wallapop search. It displays the current search area in a?subtle section at the top of the app.

While this search function is helpful, it is currently difficult to find specific items. There is a dedicated search feature, but with so few people currently selling (despite the app having been downloaded more than 3?million times), the app works more like a yard sale for impulse buys than somewhere to go for something specific.

That being said, you can pick up some bargains here and there,?but beware -?the ease-of-use of the app does open itself up to some unexpected pricing. While scrolling through items for this review, I found a microwave for 35 USD, which seemed like a fair price. But then this was followed by?somebody listing 'Nothing' for?$1. Yes,?somebody was selling nothing for actual money. I’m not saying that $1 isn’t cheap for something -?it’s just a bit expensive for nothing.

There can be some bargains to find in Wallapop, but be careful where people ask for online payment instead of in person. / c ANDROIDPIT

Wallapop does a good job of helping buyers and sellers interact, with a dedicated instant messaging feature. Here you can instantly contact any seller directly, and it’s a useful function if you have any questions or wish to meet up with the seller to see/discuss the item in person. In this way Wallapop?acts as a hassel-free way to connect two people for the exchange.?Wallapop also offers geo-based local offers around its users and?provides?a?'social shopping' experience - useful?ways that?connect?buyers with sellers, along with making the purchasing experience easier.

You don’t need to worry about delivery times,?return?troubles or seller fees because you can meet up. Just?check out the product?and take it home if you want. This is?great for cutting out the middle-man;?it means you don’t need to exchange numbers or any other information, and it’s one of the major successes of the app. ?

Private PayPal or bank transfers can be arranged between two people, of course,?but there is no guarantee that the item will ever be dispatched.?Also, the feedback system is somewhat lacking within the app, with very few ratings given, and this means that it is possible you could pay for something online and it would never be delivered.?

The app takes no learning. There are no fancy/needless gestures, all it takes is simple swipes.

Wallapop is fast during use, but it’s also prone to bugs. Sometimes images won’t load, or searches will fail to produce any results. Thankfully the developers update it often.

The app is free, and if you get some bargains, it will be absolutely worth a download.?

The strength of this app ultimately lies in its users. The more sellers it has, the more exciting it would be.?I’ve got no doubt that this could be a really?impressive and useful app when?a bigger?user-base arrives.?As it is, without a large selection of products, and?some kind of "buyer protection" in place, it feels like it could be improved.

That being said, if you're careful,?the critical app functionality is definitely there to be enjoyed. You will be able to find some interesting products, save some money, and even make some, with an easy-to-use app. Download Wallapop for free today from the Play Store.?

We’ve had a number of months to get to grips with Android Lollipop (well, some of us have), and it's high-time we take another look at how it compares to Apple’s proprietary operating system, iOS 8. Find out which is better in our iOS 8 vs Android Lollipop comparison.?

Android Lollipop vs iOS 8 comparison: which OS is better? / c ANDROIDPIT

Apple upset many users with iOS 7, which dumped cutesy copies of real-world objects - a philosophy known as skeuomorphic design - for something bolder, more colorful and considerably flatter.

iOS 8 wasn’t as dramatic an upgrade; it’s a refinement, rather than a revolution, and it introduces some features which Android users might already find familiar: autosuggested words when you reply to texts, the ability to use third party keyboards, Google Drive-style file sharing and the ability for apps to send data to one another.

Android went flat too, with its new aesthetic philosophy known as Material Design. Like iOS 8, the interface is bolder, with simpler icons than the previous editions. Google’s colorful design language also affects the interactivity to some extent, with icons and menus having a visible reaction when tapped, pulled and swiped:?Material Design is filled with subtle animations which add visual context for the user.

The refinement of icons can be seen first hand when looking at the how the navigation soft keys have changed: the return key isn’t a sweeping line with an arrowhead, it’s a triangle. And the recent apps menu, a square. Both Apple and Google focused on subtle changes to the look of the interface, rather than a total overhaul. ???

iOS 8 now supports widgets (though they are restricted to the notifications centre), and has changed the way it displays notifications to make them more discreet, but also more interactive (you can now reply to a message from the notification itself, rather than entering the app where the message lies).

iOS 8 opened the doors to replacement keyboards, Apple Pay, and HealthKit, and overall, iOS 8 is more “open” than it has been before, with more access given to third-party developers and apps. Additionally, iOS still has the lion's share of big-name exclusive apps and partnerships (highly-accurate weather app?“Dark Sky” and photo editing app “Camera+” are just two of the cool?apps Android is missing out on). ??

Android made changes to?its?notifications department also. In?Lollipop, notifications are visible on the lock screen, meaning they can be viewed without unlocking the handset (an improvement which incidentally?killed the demand for a number of apps dedicated to solving this problem).

To compliment the advances with notifications, the latest version of Android reinvented the recent apps menu, which is launched by tapping on the new square icon. This gives an endlessly scrolling list of not just your most recent apps, but your position within those apps. It’s certainly clever, and the initial concerns of?the overall effect this would have on RAM and processing power have been subsequently cast aside.

Additionally, Android Lollipop delivers?multiple user-profiles and handset unlocking when paired with Android Wear devices located nearby.

Lock screen notifications, recent apps menu, multiple user profiles and replaceable keyboards are something both?UIs have in common, but where do they differ??Android is still more customizable, with iOS 8?limiting?even simple facets of the interface, like where apps can be placed on a?homepage (they have to start at the top left?and they still can’t be hidden from the homescreen).

That being said, Android’s ability to be customized and make use of third-party products means iOS 8 is still considered the “safer” platform.

Android has a difficult time optimizing its camera software for the plethora of devices running it, but Google did take one big step in Lollipop by letting users, and other developers, directly access RAW image files.

iPhone’s image processing software is first-rate, and this means that even with the relatively low megapixel numbers we see on iPhone cameras, their pictures still look great. Furthermore, iOS 8 brings a timer mode, and some enhanced photo editing features (color/brightness/exposure controls) which weren’t available previously.

Regardless of battery capacities, iOS 8 still provides a better native platform for battery performance. Android Lollipop is said to offer a 10 percent increase in battery life compared to Android KitKat, but this hasn’t being observed across all devices. This is the price paid for multiple manufacturers and multiple UIs.

Be that as it may, Android batteries come in all shapes and sizes, so there is scope for far superior, and also far inferior, battery life. Still, few Android devices can reach the three/four day standby time of the iPhone 6 Plus.

Apple has Metal, a new API for games developers; Android 5.0 Lollipop has OpenGL ES 3.1 and the Android Extension Pack for games developers. Both can provide?console-quality gaming on mobile devices, but few games take full advantage of the technical capabilities yet.

Android 5.0 Lollipop means you won't have to wait as long for future software updates. / c ANDROIDPIT

Android devices are notoriously slow to receive updates. There are a lot of hoops manufacturers have to jump through to distribute new software, which is why, six months later, only 5 percent of devices have Lollipop. This means 95 percent of users will be comparing KitKat or a previous OS to iOS 8, which most iPhones are running (Apple usually distributes a new OS to the majority of devices within the first week).

Furthermore, Android devices are usually only supported for the first 18 months of their life, compared to iPhones, which are usually guaranteed updates for three years. (This is to say nothing of the current status of both platforms, only the longevity of devices running them.)

Let’s be honest,?the Google Play Store is all too often a hive of villainy, and while Apple may be a bit heavy-handed on the censorship front there’s no need for a big “Here Be Dragons” sign above the iTunes app store. The ongoing battle between Google and the baddies is the price you pay for a more open app store.

iOS's Health app is designed to work with all kinds of sensors / c Apple

Both OSes are designed to work with health hardware, both in smartphones and in external devices such as smartwatches.

Apple’s iOS 8 uses Health App, which it’s been working on with big names in healthcare such as the Mayo Clinic and which it’s punting to healthcare providers as a safe and secure way to store patient data as well as a useful way for customers to track their fitness. There’s an API for third party developers called HealthKit.

Android 5.0 Lollipop’s equivalent is Google Fit, and it sounds rather similar. Partners include Adidas, Asus, Withings, Runkeeper and Polar, and Nike Fuelbands will be part of the Google Fit club too. There isn’t a direct equivalent of Apple’s Health app: Google’s leaving that to the manufacturers.

Apple now has a rival to Google Wallet (Google's free digital wallet which allows you to save your debit and credit cards on an Android device for simple in-store or online payments) called Apple Pay. While it uses the same basic idea as Wallet - wireless payments via NFC - it takes a different approach. Using the TouchID fingerprint sensor to authenticate payments means that Apple Pay payments are counted as Cardholder?Present payments, just like when you use a credit or debit card in the shop. That's important because Cardholder?Present transactions cost retailers less in fees than Card Not Present ones, and it's something Apple Pay offers and Google Wallet doesn't.

For now Apple Pay is US-only but if it proves popular, and early indications suggest it will, then we'd expect to see it in Europe next year.

Mobile OSes have evolved. Both iOS (formerly iPhone OS) and Android started off as mobile phone operating systems, expanded to take in tablets - belatedly, in Android’s case - and now have their sights set on the wider world.

Both platforms are interested in three major kinds of accessories: home automation, wearables,?and in-car systems. As ever the approach is different, with Apple providing a one-stop shop and Google concentrating more on providing the platform for others to work with. How Google responds to the recent release of the Apple Watch is going to be particularly interesting, and will most certainly have an effect on the direction it takes Android Wear.

Comparing Android Lollipop to Apple iOS 8 definitely highlights more similarities than differences; these?platforms are closer than ever before. Lollipop is the most customizable OS, but the “locked-down” nature of iOS 8 means it benefits from better security, and wider integration?with services in the real world. If you walk into a store which supports a smartphone feature, be it for payments, an app download, or something else, you can bet that this will be available for iOS 8 first, and Android second. Meanwhile,?Android gives you a wide choice of hardware options,?while Apple offers a handful of admittedly beautiful devices.?

It would be unfair to look too much at availability here, after all, this is a comparison of Lollipop and iOS 8. That being said, we are comparing an OS which is on more than 70 percent of peoples'?iPhones, to something which is apparent on around five percent of Android devices, and that’s something that should be noted.

When all is said and done, we are of course biased towards Android, because it’s what we live and breath. Calling Lollipop the victor won’t mean much coming from us. iOS 8 is a worthy competitor to Android Lollipop, and Android 5.0 wouldn't have been as impressive without it. But because Material Design presents something genuinely fresh, and takes Android and smartphone interfaces at large in a smart new direction, there might not have ever been a more exciting time to go Android.

Does not Commute is one of our favorite new Android games out this month / c Mediocre Every now and then, a game comes along to the Play Store that just screams for smartphones to be taken seriously as a gaming platform. The offbeat and beautiful driving game Does not Commute is such a game. You drive various cars on missions around a 70s (meets futuristic) town, interacting with the town’s strange residents. You’ll control bikes, hot dog vans and speedboats as your initially relaxing missions descend into vehicular chaos.
This is the strangest driving game we think we've ever seen on Android. / c Mediocre Artsy and musical, Adventures of Poco Eco is a charming 3D(ish) platformer in which you control the titular Poco in his quest to recover their lost ‘Sounds’. It looks and sounds amazing, and buying the game for 1.99 USD also gives you access to the LP from its music producer Iamyank. While the puzzles aren’t too complex, it’s a perfect, relaxing game to wind down with after a hard day’s work.

Mere weeks after the original Tomb Raider was released in the Play Store, Square Enix have gone and put Lara Croft in a game that’s probably much more accessible to the average smartphone gamer. Relic Run is, simply put, Temple Run starring Lara Croft. The game looks fantastic, complimenting the twitchy-fast endless-running gameplay that works so well on handheld devices. It’s not just a matter of ducking, jumping, and parkouring either, as you’ll encounter classic bosses and even ride the occasional vehicle.

SI Games has listened to the tablet owners crying out for a full, deep version of the world’s most popular football management sim. Unlike Football Manager Handheld, this isn’t some quick-fix game you can play during a toilet break, but a true replication of the PC version - with a 3D match engine, proper transfer system, and all the other micromanagement you’d expect from Football Manager. Finally, the management sim Android has been waiting for. Download it here.
Finally, a proper, undiluted version of Football Manager for Android. / c SI Games Dismemberment, beheadings and bone-breaking. These are just some of the lovely things you’ll be doing in the Android version of the latest super-gory fighting game in the legendary franchise. ‘X’ features several new characters, as well as old favorites Scorpion, Johnny Cage, Sonya, Sub-Zero et al. The game is adapted for Android, so the gameplay is largely about timing your swipes to execute complex combos and, of course, fatalities. Some way be put off by the ultra-violence, but others will find it bloody brilliant (we went there!).
Swipe people's heads off and tap their spines out in Mortal Kombat X. / c Warner Bros Games Taking a refreshing turn away from the typical isometric empire builders we see on Android devices, CivCrafter sees you manage your empire from a side-on perspective - and it works beautifully. Build armies, watch your empire grow (remember that old City View screen in?the original?Civilization

?), and gather resources as you brace your populace of pixellated people for war against others. It's a 'clicker' game of the highest order, and is surprisingly deep beneath its accessible surface. It's free(mium) too, so no harm in giving it a try (aside from the possibility of getting addicted and spending hundreds of dollars on in-game purchases).

if you prefer to be a bit more real-time with your strategy, then DomiNations could be for you. From Brian Reynolds (Civilization II, Rise of Nations) comes this rich, beautiful and intense game that proves mobile devices can successfully do deep strategy. Take your nation from the stone age to the space age, form alliances, recruit legendary generals, and go to war across all time. You can play open-ended single-player campaigns, or take part in legendary historical ones such as the Fertile Crescent and the Peloponnesian War.

The second empire-builder worth checking out in April looks jaw-dropping, and proves that handheld strategy games don't have to be simple. c NEXON M Inc.

Cartoon Network brings us a unique RPG based on the Steven Universe cartoon. It's visual style is completely faithful to the source material, but you don't have to be a fan of the cartoon to enjoy this game. Control Steven, Garnet, Pearl and Amethyst and take them on a quest to stop a destructive Gem weapon. It's extremely accessible, and its turn-based combat has enough depth that you'll have trouble putting this one down. Colorful, funny, and beautifully-designed for the touchscreen.

Table tennis games on touchscreens aren't really?a novelty anymore, and don't make as much of an impression now as they did when the first iPhone came out, but Table Tennis Touch gives the genre a welcome overhaul. Get trained up by Wiff Waff the robot, then jump into career mode, quick game mode, or one of 12 mini games as you seek to become a ping pong master. This game is exclusive to Android Lollipop, and its variety of environments - from school halls to garages - look absolutely?stunning. The super-spinny gameplay is fast, responsive, and perfectly suited to you Android touchscreen.

One of the most iconic and influential PC games of all time comes somersaulting?onto your?Android device. Sure, the original Tomb Raider?feels dated and rickety by today's standards, but at the very reasonable price of 99 cents, it's worth it for sheer nostalgic and sentimental value alone. The controls are as good as they could be for an old 3D game on a touchscreen (i.e. mediocre), but we love the crispy high-res visuals so you can really appreciate the fully blocky glory of this all-time classic. Check this out if you want a piece of videogame history in the palm of your hand.

The hit PC RPG goes mobile with Byte and Magic
. Create a party of three heroes (choosing from 30 classes), then head forth on a quest?to rid the world of some malevolent force. Pixel Heroes is part of the recent ‘Roguelike’ resurgence, so in this game death is permanent, amusing random events pop up for you to deal with, and combat is turn-based. The vague story is that Freddy Fazbear's Pizza has now been replaced with a theme park ride called Fazbear's Fright.?It's your job as the?security guard to monitor the cameras, lighting and security doors at Fazbear's, and keep an eye out for strange activity - in this case, the movements of a haggard old mascot called Springtrap. If you don't watch carefully, he appears in the security room and scares the living hell out of you - making for the most suspenseful experience on Android.
